Latin America

Cooperation with Latin America aims to build on the long-standing relation that Leiden University has with multiple partners in the region.

In the past years, Leiden University has developed close partnerships with academic institutions in the region, leading to a number of joint activities. Latin- America is full of opportunities to create impact together through research, education and outreach activities: on biodiversity in the Amazon, on migration issues, on data and indigenous cultures, on Global Health. This potential is the reason Leiden University invest in Latin-America as a priority region.

Latin-America is large and diverse, and each country offers its own opportunities when it comes to higher education collaboration. Leiden University focusses primarily on collaborations with key partners in Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico. We established close partnerships in these countries that are of key strategic value. This shows in the large number of initiatives and projects in those countries.

One of the flagship initiatives is Biodiversidad(e): a lecture series connecting biodiversity research, ai tools and indigenous knowledge, that is the basis for a large, interdisciplinary and transnational network of scientists, foundations and businesses.

Leiden University has special ties with the Universidad Diego Portales, in Santiago Chile. Numerous research projects as well as a joint phd programme are currently running. UDP also offers opportunities for students and staff mobility, bringing us closer together and opening the continent to us. The Latin-America Region Group, led by [x] and Mara Constantinescu, has developed a great network in the region, with strong connections to Una Europa, LDE Global and Coimbra Group activities as well.
