Leiden University no longer active on X
As of 1 February 2025, Leiden University will cease activity on its corporate account on X and will post on alternative social media such as Bluesky and Mastodon. This means the @UniLeiden and @UniLeidenNews X accounts will not post new content and will no longer respond to others. The existing content will remain up and accessible for now.
There are various reasons why we are no longer posting on X. We’ve watched it become a platform spreading disinformation, hate, violence and threats. And where personal insults and threats are nothing out of the ordinary. This goes against our vision of providing a safe working environment and fostering constructive discussions. It is also unclear what exactly X does with user data.
And finally, most of our followers on X are inactive or fake accounts. This coupled with a decrease in the number of X users and an increase in users on other platforms has led us to conclude that these appear to be more effective communication channels.
Individual members of our academic community are, of course, free to choose for themselves.
