Career Guidance

The post-PhD phase is discussed during the many formal and informal meetings PhD candidates have with their supervisor.

In order to better prepare PhD candidates for the labour market, the Faculty of Archaeology organises an annual PhD Career Event, consisting of workshops, lectures, alumni sessions and other activities, such as taking a professional LinkedIn profile picture and a personal CV check by an HRM expert.

For PhD candidates in their final year a special two-day course is available at Leiden University: the Competences and Motives course, offering insight into future career possibilities. Another such course is Job interview skills for PhDs. This course aims to help PhD candidates present themselves properly in a CV,  a letter of application or an interview. For more courses on career development for PhD candidates, please visit the HRM courses website.

The career coaches at the University Career Service can also help you orient yourself towards the job market. This service is only available for employed PhD candidates with the permission of their supervisor and Institute Manager. Leiden University has launched a special website to help you even better with your career orientation. The new Career Platform is free and accessible for all young researchers. It offers extra online options, like self-reflection test, online courses and inspirational testimonials from alumni. It makes it easy to seek advice, by making an online appointment with a career advisor.
