Faculty of Science
Information on contract teaching at the Faculty of Science.
Contract education
The Faculty of Science offers the possibility to follow a number of courses separately from the entire curriculum. This 'contract education' is intended for those interested in delving into a specific topic but not wanting or being able to follow the entire programme.
What is a contract student
Contract students follow one or more courses and pay an amount based on the number of study points. They are not enrolled as regular students at Leiden University but as contract students in the programme itself.
For whom
Contract students do not intend to complete the full (propedeuse/bachelor/master) programme and graduate with an academic exam. Also, those interested who do not have the required prior education can follow contract education. Contract students join regular students in the lecture hall and are expected to put in the same effort as other students.
Costs
The size of each course is indicated in so-called ECs (European Credits). One EC represents 28 hours of study. For taking bachelor's and master's courses, €163 per EC is charged. For this amount, the education can be followed (lectures and workgroups) and the exam (plus any possible resit) can be taken.
Registration and payment
To register for a course as a contract student, contact the study advisor/study coordinator of the programme offering the course. If approved by the programme, you will receive the registration form from the programme. Please fill out, sign, and return the registration form (to the address indicated on the form). You will then receive a confirmation with the following information:
- Confirmation of the chosen course or courses
- The associated costs and how you can pay them
Only after payment receipt will the registration be fulfilled. A Brightspace account and filenumber will then be created.
Exam
For each course, there is 1 regular exam (or multiple partial exams) and one resit per academic year. If you do not pass the exam the first time, you may take the resit exam within the same academic year.
Course offer
More information about the course offer and purchasing books and/or syllabi can be found in the e-Study Guide.
Proof of participation
After completing a course, you can request a certificate of participation in your name. This certificate will only be issued if you have passed the final exam of the course and fulfilled any workgroup obligations. It is not possible to issue a separate certificate confirming attendance at lectures. The certificate can be requested from the Student Administration, email: sosz-admin@science.leidenuniv.nl.
If you later decide to follow the regular programme, proof of participation in a particular course can sometimes provide an exemption.
Locations
The current schedule can be requested from the study advisor/study coordinator of the programme offering the course.
Facilities
Contract education students can use the library and computer facilities of the Faculty of Science during the duration of the education component for which they are enrolled. Computer use is required because Brightspace (a digital learning environment) is used in education.
