Onderwijs

Aan de Universiteit Leiden worden cursussen over papyri en papyrologie aangeboden voor beginners en gevorderden (BA en MA), zowel op basis van teksten in vertaling als in de originele brontalen, van Egyptisch tot Grieks, Latijn en Arabisch.

Overzicht cursussen

Veel van de onderstaande cursussen kunnen ook als keuzevak gekozen worden en/of gecombineerd tot een minorpakket van 15-30 EC; sommige zijn ook geschikt om als à-la-carte-college gevolgd te worden. Bij twijfel is het verstandig eerst contact op te nemen met de docent. Voor de nadere beschrijving van onderstaande cursussen wordt verwezen naar de e-studiegids.

EERSTE SEMESTER

Papyrologische bronnen [BA, 5 EC]

Inleiding in de papyrologie en het gebruik van papyrologische bronnen voor oudhistorisch onderzoek. Er wordt uitsluitend met vertaalde teksten gewerkt.

Schriftelijke bronnen van het Oude Nabije Oosten [BA, 5 EC]

Inleiding in de bronnen overgeleverd uit het Oude Nabije Oosten: van spijkerschriftdocumenten op kleitabletten en hiëroglyfische inscripties in steen tot teksten op papyrus, perkament en palmribben. Er wordt uitsluitend met vertaalde teksten gewerkt.

Ancient Egyptian Law [BA, 5 EC]

In this course we will examine some of the basic aspects of the Egyptian legal system based on legal manuals as well as hieroglyphic, hieratic and demotic juridical papyri in translation.

Koptisch 1 [BA, 10 EC]

Taalverwerving van het Sahidisch Koptisch, waarbij verschillende soorten teksten, inclusief papyri, in het Koptisch worden gelezen.

Hiëratische paleografie [BA, 10 EC]

Lectuur van teksten in het Oudegyptische cursiefschrift uit de periode van ca. 2500-1100 vóór Christus, inclusief originele papyri in het Rijksmuseum van Oudheden.

Papyrus Archives and Libraries in the Ancient World (2500 BCE – 1000 CE) [MA, 10 EC]

In this course students will learn about the archaeological contexts, acquisition history and reconstruction methods of papyrus archives and libraries from the oldest Egyptian texts in hieroglyphs, hieratic and demotic scripts, to the use of Greek and Latin in the Eastern Mediterranean, down to the production of Aramaic, Coptic and Arabic texts in Late Antiquity in Egypt and the Middle East. All texts will be discussed in translation during classes, but students with knowledge of a relevant language will the study the papyri in their chosen papyrus archive in the original language.

Culture and Society in the Medieval Muslim World [MA, 10 EC]

This course will examine the daily life experience of medieval Muslims through literary, documentary and archaeological sources to deepen the student’s knowledge and experience of the social and economic history of medieval Islam and to familiarise him/her with the written sources in Egypt and ‘Greater Mesopotamia’ between ca. 640 and 1000 CE.

TWEEDE SEMESTER

Papyrus en perkament: de overlevering van klassieke bronnen [BA, 5 EC]

Deze cursus laat studenten kennismaken met de handschriften (paleografie) en de materiële vorm van Griekse en Latijnse handgeschreven teksten vanaf de oudheid tot het begin van de boekdrukkunst. Kennis van Grieks en Latijn wordt verondersteld.

Editing Greek Papyri [BA, 5 EC]

Students learn to read unpublished Greek papyri from the collection of the Leiden Papyrological Institute.

Editing Greek Papyri [(Res)MA, 10 EC]

Students learn to prepare a first edition of an unpublished Greek papyrus from the collection of the Leiden Papyrological Institute.

Koptisch 2 [BA, 5 EC]

Lectuur van Koptische teksten op basis van originele bronnen, zoals teksten geschreven op papyrus, aardewerk of steen.

Coptic Papyrology [MA, 10 EC]

Reading various genres of Coptic non-literary texts in different varieties of the language. The texts will be read from original sources as found in excavations and in museum collections, such as inscriptions, graffiti, papyri and ostraca (potsherds), and students will learn how to prepare a text edition of a fragment.
