Mitch van Geel studeerde psychologie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (2001-2006). Hij heeft zijn studie afgerond met een specialisatie in methoden en technieken. Na zijn studie heeft hij een proefschrift over de acculturatie en adaptatie van migrantenjongeren in Nederland afgerond aan de Universiteit Leiden (2006-2009). Sinds 2009 is hij als universitair docent werkzaam bij de Universiteit Leiden. Hij geeft de vakken Inleiding in de Pedagogische Wetenschappen en Behandeling: interventies binnen de orthopedagogiek, en doet onderzoek naar pesten en cyberpesten.

Onderzoek
Het onderzoek van Mitch van Geel richt zich vooral op pesten en cyberpesten tussen jongeren. Hij analyseert hierbij wat de mogelijke gevolgen zijn van pesten, maar doet ook onderzoek naar welke jongeren de grootste kans hebben om dader of slachtoffer van (cyber)pesten te worden. Daarnaast is Mitch van Geel als methodoloog/statisticus en/of als co-promotor betrokken bij onderzoeken naar tijdsbesteding van jongeren in India, pleegzorg, psychopathie onder jongeren, reboundvoorzieningen, polarisatie en migrantenjongeren.
