Prof. dr. Bernet Elzinga verricht met haar groep onderzoek naar de invloed van trauma en stress op affectieve, sociale en cognitieve functies in de context van stress-gerelateerde stoornissen, waaronder depressie en angst. Intergenerationeel onderzoek heeft haar bijzondere interesse, met name de communicatie tussen ouders en kinderen en factoren die er toe bij kunnen dragen dat negatieve gevolgen van mishandeling of stress kunnen worden gereduceerd. Met haar interdisciplinaire onderzoek integreert ze onder andere epidemiologisch onderzoek neuro-imaging, gedragsobservaties en rapportages van gedrag en gevoelens in het dagelijks leven (mbv electronische dagboeken). Daarnaast is ze betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van interventies voor ouders met jongeren met depressieve klachten.Voor haar onderzoek heeft ze verschillende subsidies ontvangen, waaronder VENI, VIDI, VICI en draagt ze als PI bij aan het Zwaartekracht programma ‘New Science of Mental Disorders’. Naast haar onderzoek verzorgt ze regelmatig lezingen en onderwijs aan bachelor- en masterstudenten Psychologie , en is betrokken bij diverse trajecten rondom leiderschapsontwikkeling.
