Liberal Arts and Sciences: Global Challenges (BA/BSc)

Admission requirements

For admission to LUC's Liberal Arts and Sciences: Global Challenges programme you need to meet certain requirements. Please view the diploma, English and mathematics requirements below.

LUC The Hague is an honours programme of Leiden University and therefore additional diploma requirements apply. Please view the general admission requirements of Leiden University as well as the additional requirements for LUC on this diploma list.

If your diploma is not on the list, please contact the Admissions Office to inquire about your specific admission requirements before you apply. If you meet the admission requirements for Leiden University, but not the additional ones stated for LUC The Hague, you can still submit an application for our programme. Please note that in this case you have a lower chance to be selected.

LUC offers a fully English taught programme and all applicants need to be proficient in English. Indicate your English proficiency level on the LUC form (see required documents). That is sufficient in order to submit your application. There are two ways to prove your English proficiency:

  1. Obtain one of the accepted English proficiency tests with the required scores.
  2. Obtain a diploma (with or without a grade requirement) that is considered sufficient proof. View the diploma list to check if your diploma is sufficient and look for: "English language test exemptions". If this section is not stated for your diploma, you will have to take an English proficiency test for admission.

The following English proficiency tests and scores are accepted:

Not accepted are: IELTS General Training, IELTS Indicator, IELTS online, TOEFL My Best ™ scores (multiple test scores combined), TOEFL Essentials™, TOEFL IBT Special Home Edition™, TOEFL IBT Paper Edition™ or institutional tests such as ITP.

Chinese students who need a Nuffic certificate should either take an IELTS Academic or TOEFL internet-based test.

LUC offers a Liberal Arts and Sciences programme and in the first year of the programme, all applicants must take a course in mathematics. Although it is offered at two different levels, without a general understanding of mathematics it will be difficult to pass this course and passing this course is a requirement to obtain your bachelor's degree at LUC. Therefore, it is important that, if you decide to apply, you are aware of your mathematics level and skills.

On this list you can view which secondary education mathematics level and grades are considered sufficient to take the LUC mathematics course. Please note that obtaining one of those stated results does not guarantee success in LUC's mathematics course. We strongly advise you to review the mathematics course content here to assess whether you have the required skills.

If you do not have sufficient mathematics skills and you will not obtain any of the results on the stated list, but you are confident that you can improve and are willing to work hard to do so, you need to submit a mathematics improvement plan through the LUC form. If you are admitted to LUC, you will need to take a mathematics diagnostic exam to test your skills and to help you determine which topics you still need to improve on.
