From Leiden tot Delaware: How empirical legal research on valuation biases was used in a US courtroom

Many of our department’s staff members are actively involved in the Empirical Legal Studies lab and strive towards publishing impactful empirical legal research.

Recently, Marc Broekema, Niek Strohmaier, Jan Adriaanse, and Jean-Pierre van der Rest (all part of the department of Business Studies) published an empirical paper in which they found that psychological biases can have a detrimental impact in valuation disputes. This conclusion was recently cited by the Delaware Court of Chancery in the US as part of a valuation dispute involving telecom giant AT&T. Marc Broekema and Niek Strohmaier wrote a short blog post about the key findings of their paper and the AT&T case heard by the Delaware Court. Their blog can be found here.
