An overview of awards and prizes granted to our staff and students in 2022, as well as special appointments at Leiden University and other institutions.

Grants 2022

  • A consortium of researchers led by Alfons Laarmans received an NWA grant for their research into societally relevant quantum computing.
  • A consortium of researchers led by Robert Rissman received an NWA grant for their research into inflammatory skin diseases and personalized care.

ERC proof of concept grants

  • Nathaniel Martin received an ERC proof of concept grant for his research into making an existing antibiotic less toxic for humans.

ERC starting grants

  • Jordi Tura Brugués and their FINE-TEA-SQUAD project received an ERC starting grant for research into the practical applications of NISQ (noisy, intermediate-scale quantum) devices.
  • Bas Hensen received an ERC starting grant for his research into combining quantum mechanics and general relativity by trying to create quantum entanglement through the use of gravity.
  • Pingtao Ding received an ERC starting grant for his research into the molecular mechanisms by which plants resist pathogens.
  • Sebastian Pomplun received an ERC starting grant for his research into influencing gene expression.

  • Gilles van Wezel received an ERC advanced grant for his research into antibiotic-producing bacteria.
  • Henk Hoekstra received an ERC advanced grant for his research into mapping dark matter across the Universe.
  • The National Growth Fund awarded million euros in grants to two consortia: Pharma-NL and Oncode-PACT.
  • Leiden University researchers get an EU grant to research artificial green fuels.
  • SURF & DUS-I grant for open source laboratory education.
