Na een opleiding tot onderwijzer basisonderwijs en studies onderwijskunde en ontwikkelingspsychologie in Groningen begon ik daar mijn promotieonderzoek naar coöperatief leren bij het rekenen op de basisschool. In 1985 behaalde ik mijn doctoraat. Daarna deed ik onderzoek op Curaçao naar meertalig onderwijs. Vanaf 1988, terug in Nederland, werkte ik drie jaar bij het Instituut voor Onderwijsonderzoek als onderzoeksevaluator en ”international officer”. In 1991 begon ik te werken bij de Universiteit Leiden, het instituut Pedagogische Wetenschappen; eerst bij de sectie interculturele pedagogiek, toen bij Onderwijswetenschappen en uiteindelijk als hoogleraar bij Forensische Gezinspedagogiek en Jeugdhulpverlening.

Onderzoek
Mijn onderzoeksgroep doet onderzoek naar gedragsproblemen, zoals pesten, problemen bij pleegzorg (o.a. breakdown) en rond culturele diversiteit (acculturatie-conflicten, radicalisering). We proberen te achterhalen welke omstandigheden en eigenschappen conflicten en probleemgedrag veroorzaken en versterken. Bij het voorkomen en verminderen richten we ons op het reguleren van samenwerking en contact.
Prijzen
Op 23 maart 1995 heeft de 'Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation' mij de Nils-Eric Svensson beurs voor getalenteerde wetenschappers toegekend. Ik heb de beurs gebruikt om van augustus 1995 tot januari 1996 als gastonderzoeker en docent te werken op het Institute of International Education van de universiteit van Stockholm.
