Gert-Jan Boon is als onderzoeker en docent verbonden aan de afdelingen Ondernemingsrecht en Bedrijfswetenschappen van de Leiden Law School. Na afronding van zijn master Marketing (Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam) en master Ondernemingsrecht (Universiteit Leiden) is hij onderzoek gaan doen op het terrein van het herstructureren van noodlijdende ondernemingen. Zijn onderzoek heeft daarbij een sterk Europees/internationaal karakter. Het promotieonderzoek van Gert-Jan richt zich op de rol van de Debtor-in-Possession (schuldenaar die zijn goederen in bezit houdt) bij herstructurering.

Het promotieonderzoek van Gert-Jan richt zich op de rol van de Debtor-in-Possession (schuldenaar die zijn goederen in bezit houdt) bij herstructurering. Het proefschrift heeft als werktitel: On the rescue of businesses in distress: a study of the Debtor in Possession.
Daarnaast is Gert-Jan betrokken (geweest) bij diverse internationale onderzoeksprojecten, waaronder:
- Judicial Co-Operation supporting Economic Recovery in Europe (JCOERE) project, 2019-2020 (which aims to enhance judicial co-operation under the European Recast Insolvency Regulation recast (EU 2015/848) supporting preventive restructuring (rescue) processes for European businesses);
- European Law Institute (ELI), Rescue of Business in Insolvency Law, 2014-2020 (als lid van het projectteam deed Gert-Jan (samen met Prof. em. Bob Wessels en Prof. Stephan Madaus) rechtsvergelijkend onderzoek naar het juridisch kader in Europa voor het redden/herstructureren van bedrijven in financiële moeilijkheden. Het resulteerde in het ELI Business Rescue Report met 115 aanbevelingen dat in 2017 unaniem door ELI is aangenomen en 2020 is gepubliceerd door OUP);
- EU Court-to-Court Insolvency Cooperation Principles, 2015 (ontwikkeling van Principles en Guidelines voor samenwerking door Europese rechters in grensoverschrijdende insolventiezaken, een project medegefinancierd door de Europese Unie en het International Insolvency Institute);
- INSOL Europe, Statement of Principles and Best Practices for Insolvency Office Holders in Europe, 2014 (ontwikkeling van Europese gedragsregels voor curatoren, een project geïnitieerd door INSOL Europe);
- INSOL Europe, Guidelines for Out-of-Court Restructuring and Turnaround Professionals, 2015 (ontwikkeling van Europese gedragsregels voor restructuring en turnaround professionals, een project geïnitieerd door INSOL Europe).
Gert-Jan is lid van het Business & Law Research Network (BLRN) en het TRI Leiden research team. Verder is hij onder meer een fellow van het European Law Institute (ELI), adjunct-secretaris van de Conference on European Restructuring and Insolvency Law (CERIL), voorzitter van het INSOL Europe Younger Academics Network of Insolvency Law (YANIL) en bestuurslid van de INSOL Europe Academic Forum (IEAF). Daarnaast is hij namens ELI observer bij vergaderingen van Werkgroep V (insolventie) van de United Nations Committee on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL).
