Ferry A. Ossendorp is hoogleraar Moleculaire Vaccinbiologie en hoofd van de Tumor Immunologie groep op de afdeling Immunologie van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum. Hij is ook lid van de Wetenschappelijke Raad van KWF Kankerbestrijding.
Moleculaire vaccin biologie en Tumor immunologie
Immuuntherapie heeft in de strijd tegen kanker een stevige plaats geworven naast de klassieke chemo- en radiatietherapieën. De waarneming dat het immuunsysteem ook maligne cellen kan aanvallen en de groei van kanker kan remmen is al lang bekend maar de cellulaire en moleculaire mechanismes zijn pas de laatste decaden duidelijk geworden. Moleculair ontwerp van kanker-specifieke vaccins met moderne kennis is een centraal onderzoeksthema. Therapeutische vaccinatie heeft als groot voordeel dat de geïnduceerde afweerreactie selectief tumoren aanvalt en de gezonde cellen onaangetast laat. In theorie dus de ideale therapie zonder heftige bijwerkingen. Het huidige onderzoek richt zich op beter begrip van de vaccinatie mechanismes en op mogelijkheden om het suppressieve milieu in de tumoren te beïnvloeden zodat immuuntherapie effectief kan werken. Hiertoe worden nieuwe combinatietherapieën in detail onderzocht.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Ferry Ossendorp heeft Biologie gestudeerd op de Universiteit van Amsterdam en zijn promotieonderzoek gedaan aan het Nederlands Kanker Instituut in Amsterdam. Dit leidde tot promotie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De titel van zijn proefschrift (1989) was: "Thyroid antigens and monoclonal antibodies in a thyroid tumor model". Vervolgens werd postdoc onderzoek gedaan aan de rol van T cel functies in kanker aan het Nederlands Kanker Instituut. Zijn carrière werd voortgezet als senior onderzoeker op een zelf verworven KWF project in het Academisch Ziekenhuis Leiden in 1993. Vanaf 1996 werd hij wetenschappelijk staflid op de afdeling Immunohematologie en Bloedtransfusie (nu Immunologie) op het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum. In 2001 werd hij Universitair Docent en in 2005 Universitair Hoofddocent. Hij werd in November 2010 benoemd als hoogleraar Moleculair gedefinieerde Vaccinbiologie bij de faculteiten Geneeskunde en Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen. De titel van zijn oratie is: ”Op de juiste knopjes drukken”.
Al meer dan 25 jaar doet Ferry Ossendorp onderzoek naar het immuunsysteem en kanker en is nu hoofd van de Tumor Immunologie groep. Fundamenteel onderzoek naar het T cel immuunsysteem in verschillende facetten is centraal in zijn groep. Studies naar antigeen opname, processing en presentatie aan T cellen, de biologie van dendritische cellen en de regulatie van de immuniteit staan te doel om de afweerreacties tegen tumorcellen beter te begrijpen en immuuntherapie van kanker te verbeteren. Recent zijn onderzoeksresultaten uit het laboratorium en in proefdieren vertaalt in een vroege klinische studie waarin kankerpatienten worden ingespoten met een experimenteel tumor-specifiek peptide-conjugaat vaccin.
Prijzen en eervolle benoemingen
Ferry Ossendorp heeft persoonlijke subsidies verkregen bij NWO TOP (2011), CTMM (2011) en de Amerikaanse Cancer Research Institute CRI (2015). In 2016 werd de Leiden University Translational Drug Discovery & Development “Molecule to Man” Award verkregen met het doel patient-specifieke kanker immunotherapie te ontwikkelen.
