Erik-jan Zürcher is emeritus hoogleraar. Hij is expert op het gebied van Turkije, met name op het gebied van de overgangsperiode van het Ottomaanse Rijk naar de Republiek Turkije (grofweg 1880-1950) en in de rol van de Young Turk-generatie/beweging bij dit proces. Na een periode waarin hij de politieke geschiedenis van deze periode bestudeerd heeft, kreeg hij gaandeweg ook meer interesse in de sociale geschiedenis. Hij is van mening dat de sleutel tot een beter begrip van het ontstaan van het moderne Turkije gelegen is in het met elkaar in verband brengen van de processen van gedwongen migratie, oorlog, de erfenis van het Ottomaanse Rijk en de vorming van de staat. Zürcher verschijnt regelmatig in de media om actualiteit rond Turkije te duiden.
