Special Interest Groups

Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are change- and action-oriented thematic communities in which forward-thinking staff from across all faculties and expertise centres collaborate on emerging and pressing educational topics. These groups are aimed both horizontally and vertically within the university and include, among others, teachers, (technical) support staff, policy advisors, educational scientists, and researchers.

At the heart of Leiden's learning ecosystem, SIGs bring together diverse expertise to exchange practical insights, strengthen cross-faculty collaboration, and identify trends which shape the university's approach to teaching and learning.

For further details about specific SIGs as well as how to join, please refer to the descriptions below.

AI in Education (AIED)

The AI in Education (AIED) SIG welcomes a wide range of members from across Leiden University including innovative teachers, researchers, educational designers, policy advisors, IT staff, and educational support staff.

The main aims of the SIG are to:

  • Explore the pedagogical, ethical, and practical implications of Generative AI in education
  • Share knowledge, experiences, recourses, and best practices
  • Provide support for developing responsible and effective GenAI strategies
  • Foster collaboration
  • Drive grassroot change and action

The SIG will organise between three and six events per year, ranging from interactive workshops, community discussions, and showcases to ad hoc sessions in response to new developments and urgent topics. Moreover, the SIG aims to support local events across faculties.

The frequency of these events may evolve based on member interest and emerging needs.

Learning Analytics

Our primary aim is to create a strong community of educators, support staff, and researchers who are interested in sharing knowledge, experiences, and ideas related to Learning Analytics.

By connecting people across faculties and roles, we want to spark innovation and lower the threshold for starting new analytics-driven initiatives. We also aim to make Learning Analytics an integral and sustainable component of our education, working together with researchers to ensure Learning Analytics projects are grounded in evidence-based approaches. Ultimately, our focus is on student benefit and study success.

We will organise events, ranging from in-person meetings with a longer programme, to online presentations on relevant topics. The frequency will depend on the needs and ideas expressed by members of the SIG. It is not obligatory to attend every session.

Immersive Experiences (IX)

Dedicated to exploring key, practical questions surrounding the use of IX (Immersive Experiences) technology in education and research, the IX SIG is open to all staff and PhD students at Leiden University.

Our regular in-person sessions provide a platform to discuss and develop ongoing projects, increase awareness of funding opportunities, and provide practical technological guidance, doing so while connecting staff from across our institution.

Moreover, the SIG offers a variety of opportunities to share and gain feedback on projects. We warmly welcome presentations at our in-person sessions as well as at the monthly online meetings of the LLInC-organised (inter)national online knowledge-sharing community, XR ERA

To join the SIG or ask any questions you might have, please email the organisational team at: ix-sig@llinc.leidenuniv.nl. Soon afterwards, you will receive a link to join the Teams environment.

Inter- and Transdisciplinary Education (ITE)

The Inter- and Transdisciplinary Education (ITE) SIG has had a successful internal kick-off, with the formation of a core team comprising enthusiastic and experienced colleagues from LLInC, LURIS, ICLON, FGGA, and FSW.

Small-scale input sessions will soon be scheduled and the insights gathered during these sessions will inform the direction and priorities of the SIG.

For more information and to join the SIG, please contact the team at ITE-SIG@leidenuniv.nl.
