About the project
The aim of this ICM project is to give students the chance to explore and understand foreign legal systems and cultures, while offering comparative and international law courses that complement their home university's curriculum. The project's main goal is to allow Lebanese students to deepen their knowledge of European Union Law.
In the 2024 Fall semester, five students from USEK visited Leiden University. Apart from these student mobilities, six USEK members of staff travelled to Leiden in May 2025. This staff visit, including two professors and various support staff, highlighted a strong mutual interest in deeper collaboration between both partners. Colleagues from various departments in the Leiden Law School, but also from central level and other faculties were invited to meet with the colleagues from USEK.
USEK is eager to learn from Leiden University's expertise in sustainability, internationalisation, student services, and marketing. USEK is motivated to implement similar structures and strategies, while also sharing their own strengths, such as a vibrant campus life and personalised student support. The meetings between various professors proved to be useful as well: Topics for possible joint research were agreed upon. Both partners recognise clear opportunities for cooperation, particularly in research, staff exchange, and student-focused initiatives, and are committed to building a lasting partnership.
To continue the cooperation and enable more mobilities in the future, both partners reapplied for ICM in the 2025 call. With success: the new project was granted in July 2025, with the first mobilities possible in 2026.
