Sustainability upgrade University Library
The sustainability upgrade of the University Library (UB) is well under way. The building now has entirely new façade glazing with HR++ glass, as well as two new glazed roof domes. The climate-control system has also been modified, enabling low-temperature heating and enabling the building for connection to the thermal energy storage system. The wells are situated beneath the forecourts along the Witte Singel.
Glazed roof domes
Since spring 2026, the building has two new glazed roof domes. The existing steel structure was sufficiently strong to support the new glass. Made from double glazing with an interlayer film, they have significantly improved the indoor climate. An insulating interlayer film between the two panes of glass helps create a comfortable indoor climate.
The original plastic domes from the 1970s had visibly deteriorated and were cracked in many places. As a result, the building was prone to overheating in summer and difficult to keep warm in winter.
Transport by water
To keep CO₂ emissions to a minimum, the new glass for the domes was transported by water on a zero-emission pusher tug, travelling along the Rijn to the Rijn- en Schiekade. The old materials were removed using the same vessel.
Redesign forecourt
The forecourt between the University Library and the refurbished Herta Mohr building, formerly P.N. van Eyckhof - Van Wijkplaats, has been completely transformed, with much more greenery and inviting places to sit. The plane trees provide enough shade to keep the seating areas cool in summer. In future, the building on the other side of the University Library, Aleida Nijland, will also have a green forecourt in the same style.
