Rosalind Franklin Square

The Rosalind Franklin Square, also known as the campus square, is a green meeting place for students, staff, and city residents. It’s where the university, the business community, and the city of Leiden come together.

Location

The renewed campus square, which was largely completed in the summer of 2024, is located amidst major residential developments in the so-called Entrance Area along Plesmanlaan, the future University Sports Centre, the Lecture Hall, and the Gorlaeus Building of the Faculty of Science.

The square invites connection and interaction. Whereas it used to be mainly faculty students and staff who met here, efforts have now been made to make local residents feel welcome too. The university’s open character, with public cafés and sports facilities, helps create this inviting atmosphere.

A dynamic function

The large new Rosalind Franklin Square on Leiden Bio Science Park can be used for a range of activities for students, staff and Leiden residents. Examples of this are a knowledge festival, shows and sporting activities. Organizing a festival on the campus square, an outdoor cinema or yoga classes: all is possible. The square has turned into a green and inspiring meeting space with seating areas, and a large lawn area. The entrance of the new Gorlaeus Building is situated right on the square.

This plane tree originally stood on the site where the Gorlaeus Building now stands. Because the tree was preserved, the square immediately features a mature tree—providing shade and supporting biodiversity.
