Oogheelkunde
Prof. dr. G.P.M. Luyten is opgeleid als oogarts en gepromoveerd op het gebied van de oogoncologie. De academische oogheelkundige zorg functioneert in de keten waarbij wij zorg moeten dragen voor de hoogcomplexe zorg. Wij willen zorgdragen dat patiënten de beste zorg kunnen krijgen op de juiste plaats en juiste tijd. Dit vergt een goede samenwerking met de verschillende ketenaanbieders, huisartsen, optometristen, oogartsen en de revalidatiecentra om participatie van patiënten in de maatschappij zo maximaal mogelijk te bevorderen. Het is onze rol in de sterke verbinding van patiëntenzorg, onderwijs en onderzoek steeds te zoeken en te streven naar innovatie en verbetering van de oogzorg, dit te implementeren, dit te onderwijzen en over te dragen aan onze oogheelkundige collega’s zodat we steeds de best oogheelkundige zorg kunnen blijven leveren.
Oogoncologie
Vanuit de kliniek ben ik direct betrokken bij de diagnostiek en behandeling van de patiënten met een oogmelanoom als landelijk verwijscentrum. De onderzoekslijnen zijn de (klinische) uitkomsten en kwaliteit van diagnostiek en behandeling van patiënten met een primair en gemetastaseerd oogmelanoom met als uiteindelijk doel de prognose en kwaliteit van leven van deze patiënten te verbeteren. Huidige lijnen zijn onder andere opzetten van landelijke polikliniek voor het BAP1-tumor-predispositie-syndroom en onderzoek en implementatie van image-guided protonenbestraling.
Dysphotopsie
Patiënten krijgen in toenemende mate klachten van dysphotopsie (negatief en positief) na een succesvol uitgevoerde cataractoperatie (4-18%) wat in veel gevallen niet wordt herkend en erkend door vele oogartsen. Er bestaat geen duidelijk verklaring en oplossing voor deze klachten. In het kader van een Europees gesubsidieerde studie met een high resolution MRI-oogmodel onderzocht met behulp van raytracing technologie hierin een verklaring te vinden. Als landelijk verwijscentrum wordt bij deze patiënten een lenswissel uitgevoerd met een succespercentage tot 80%.
Regeneratieve geneeskunde
De combinatie van topreferente klinische zorg op gebied van kinderoogheelkunde en erfelijke en niet-erfelijke netvliesaandoeningen en toponderzoekers op het gebied van gentherapie en stamcelonderzoek maakt dat de afdeling sterk gaat inzetten om dit onderzoeksgebied. Door de samenwerkingen binnen en buiten het LUMC zowel nationaal als internationaal biedt dit grote kansen om binnen 10 jaar te komen tot klinische toepassingen die grote verschillen gaan maken.
