De onderzoeksfocus van Andrei Poama ligt op normatieve theorieën over straf, strafrechtethiek, het verband tussen de beginselen van rechtvaardigheid en het probleem van (overheids)gezag, de ethiek van het overheidsbeleid en de democratische theorie. Eén van zijn doelen is een omgeving creëren die de morele vragen die strafrechtethiek oproept vanuit een filosofische hoek verkent, maar op een manier die het perspectief van het strafrechtelijke apparaat en de praktijkbeoefenaars erbij betrekt.
