Gerlov van Engelenhoven verdedigde zijn PhD dissertatie, genaamd “Whereof one cannot speak…”, in December 2020 aan de Justus-Liebig Universiteit in Giessen, Duitsland. The dissertatie is een studie van de legale, politieke en culturele "stemmen" en "stiltes" in de articulatie van postkoloniale migrantenidentiteiten, met een focus op de Molukse gemeenschap in Nederland. Hij geeft de hoorcolleges voor de vakken Cultural Interaction: Conflict and Cooperation en Culture: Europe (BA International Studies), en doceert ook het keuzevak Literature, Ecocriticism and Decoloniality (MA Neerlandistiek). Naast zijn werk voor Universiteit Leiden, is hij ook mentor en docent voor de BA Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE) aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, en is hij docent, coach and scriptiebegeleider voor the BA Photography en the MA Photography & Society aan de Koninklijke Academie der Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag. Behalve zijn PhD (2020) haalde hij ook een Master of Education bij het ICLON (2014). Voor hem is onderwijs het kloppende hart van de wetenschap. Om die reden zou onderzoek, vooral in de geesteswetenschappen, altijd gedaan moeten worden in combinatie met lesgeven.
