Mijn onderzoek richt zich op de akoestische diversiteit van het mariene milieu, de wijze waarop deze de ecologie van mariene organismen beïnvloedt, en de manier waarop zintuiglijke vervuiling het gedrag van akoestisch actieve dieren kan verstoren.
Ik heb mijn bachelor- en masteropleiding Biologie aan de Universiteit Leiden afgerond, waarna ik ben gestart met een promotieonderzoek onder begeleiding van dr. Fleur Visser en prof. Hans Slabbekoorn. Tijdens mijn promotietraject onderzocht ik hoe antropogeen geluid het anti-predator- en foerageergedrag van dolfijnachtigen en vissen beïnvloedt.
Na het behalen van mijn doctoraat in 2020 werkte ik als postdoc aan het Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Verenigde Staten. Daar maakte ik gebruik van passieve akoestische monitoring om vissenzang, evenals het gedrag en de verspreiding van baleinwalvissen en dolfijnachtigen, te bestuderen. Tevens was ik betrokken bij een grootschalig samenwerkingsproject onder leiding van NOAA en de Amerikaanse marine, dat tot doel had om onderwatergeluid binnen mariene reservaten beter te begrijpen. Tussen 2022 en 2024 was ik als postdoc verbonden aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, waar ik het potentieel van vissenzang als monitoringsinstrument in de Waddenzee onderzocht. Dit project resulteerde in een succesvolle Veni-aanvraag om de mogelijkheden van vissenzang als indicator voor mariene biodiversiteit verder te bestuderen.
Momenteel werk ik als Veni-onderzoeker aan de Universiteit Leiden en als gastonderzoeker aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Mijn onderzoek richt zich op de ecologie en het behoud van de akoestische diversiteit in mariene ecosystemen.
