Kim Beerden is a university lecturer at the Institute for History. She specializes in Ancient History with a focus on Greco-Roman religions.

Dr. Kim Beerden is a historian of ancient mentalities, working in the field of religions in the Graeco-Roman world.
She has been employed as a university lecturer at Leiden University since 2013. This is also the year in which she received her PhD on the basis of her dissertation Worlds Full of Signs. Ancient Greek Divination in Context (published in a revised version at Brill, 2013; paperback 2021)
Kim Beerden publishes regularly on divination but also enjoys wider research interests into ancient religion and cultural history. She teaches on topics such as cultures of death in antiquity, life in Pompeii, literacy in ancient religions, and religion at the northern frontier of the Roman Empire. She won the LUS Teaching Prize for best lecturer at Leiden University in 2016; and led an NRO-funded project to diversify the ancient history first year curriculum.
Recently, she was Chair of Education of the Bachelor, Master and Research Master programme History (Jan. 2020 - Dec. 2022); became (in 2023) one of the editors of the Religions in the Graeco-Roman World series (Brill); and is co-founder and board member of the Leiden Center for Ancient Religions, which was established in 2024.
