Xander Tielens is hoogleraar aan de Universiteit Leiden. Zijn onderzoek is gericht op polycyclische aromatische koolwaterstoffen (PAK-moleculen). Hij was een van de eersten die het belang van deze moleculen in het heelal erkende. In 2012 was Tielens de meest geciteerde astronoom van Nederland en zijn werk ligt aan de basis van het huidige onderzoek.

Xander Tielens promoveerde met zijn proefschrift “Physics and Chemistry of interstellar dust” van de Universiteit Leiden in 1982. Daarna werkte hij als onderzoeker aan de Universiteit van Californië en het Ames Research Center van NASA. In 1997 werd hij benoemd tot hoogleraar aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen en begon hij ook te werken als onderzoeker bij SRON. Sinds 2009 is Tielens hoogleraar fysica en chemie van de interstellaire medium aan de Universiteit Leiden.
Tielens' onderzoek richt zich vooral op de interstellaire ruimte en in het bijzonder, op de polycyclische aromatische koolwaterstoffen (PAK-moleculen) die worden gevonden in deze ruimte. Zijn onderzoek leverde een belangrijke bijdrage op het gebied van gas dat aanwezig is in fotodissociatiegebieden, interstellair stof en interstellair ijs.
Tielens is ook betrokken bij de ontwikkeling van verschillende satellieten en telescopen waaronder de SOFIA telescoop en de Europese Herschel satelliet.
