Tom Buitelaar is Universitair Docent War, Peace & Justice aan het Institute of Security and Global Affairs van de Universiteit Leiden. Hij bestudeert en doceert over de rol van internationale ingrepen in conflicten, met specifieke aandacht voor hoe de interveniërende partijen vrede en rechtvaardigheid in evenwicht houden. Hij heeft bijzondere interesse in de microdynamiek van deze interventies, de rol van individuele actoren en hoe ze worden geleid door internationale normen. Tom heeft een doctoraat behaald aan het Europees Universitair Instituut en twee masterdiploma's van de Universiteit Utrecht en de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
Zijn meest recente publicaties omvatten Assisting International Justice: Cooperation Between UN Peacekeepers and the International Criminal Court in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Oxford University Press), evenals verschillende artikelen in het European Journal of International Relations, Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding en Contemporary Security Policy.
Hij is tevens de coördinator van de Minor Global Affairs en medevoorzitter van het Leiden University Centre for International Relations.
Tot slot is Tom medevoorzitter van het Dutch Peacekeeping Network, dat NGO's, academici en de Nederlandse ministeries van Buitenlandse Zaken en Defensie bijeenbrengt om de Nederlandse rol in VN-vredesoperaties te overwegen en te verbeteren.
Hij staat open voor PhD-voorstellen over bovenstaande onderwerpen.
