Rychard Bouwens heeft Bachelor of Science degrees van Hope College in natuurkunde, wiskunde en scheikunde (magna cumlaude). Hij verkreeg zijn PhD bij de universiteit van Californie-Berkely met zijn onderzoek over de formatie en evolutie van sterrenstelsels. Hij was een Postdoctoral Fellow bij het ACS GTO Team van de Universiteit van Californie- Santa Cruz en is momenteel Associate Professor bij de Sterrewacht Leiden.
