Rik van Gijn is universitair hoofddocent aan het Centre for Linguistics. Hij richt zich op de inheemse talen van (west) Zuid Amerika, en met name op de vraag hoe de indrukwekkende taaldiversiteit zich daar heeft ontwikkeld. Momenteel onderzoekt hij dee vragen in het kader van zijn ERC consolodator project South American Population History Revisited (SAPPHIRE). Zijn onderwijservaring omvat Zuid-Amerikaanse talen, typologie, morfologie, taalkundig veldwerk, beschrijvende taalkunde, en taalcontact.
