Petra Sijpesteijn is hoogleraar Arabisch. Haar onderzoek richt zich op de reconstructie van het dagelijks leven van moslims en niet-moslims in de begintijd van de islam op basis van tot nu toe weinig gebruikte bronnen uit die tijd: papyri. Sinds 2017 leidt Sijpesteijn een internationaal onderzoeksproject getiteld "Embedding Conquest: Naturalising Muslim Rule in the Early Islamic Empire (600-1000)", gefinancierd door de European Research Council.

Onderzoek
Sijpesteijns onderzoek richt zich op de reconstructie van het dagelijks leven van moslims en niet-moslims in het vroege islamitische rijk, op basis van weinig gebruikte en vaak nog onontcijferde contemporaine bronnen, papyri. Ze probeert een beeld te krijgen van de gevarieerde uitingen van islam tijdens de ontstaansgeschiedenis van deze religie.
Door de overgang van het pre-islamitische Byzantijnse systeem (en de Egyptische variant daarvan) naar de Arabisch-islamitische staatsvorm te bestuderen, wil Sijpesteijn inzicht krijgen in de mate waarin de Arabieren voortbouwden op eerdere rijken én in de vernieuwingen die zij introduceerden. Ze is bovendien geïnteresseerd in de dynamische historische processen die ten grondslag liggen aan de overgang van de Arabische veroveringen naar een gevestigd islamitisch rijk dat zich uitstrekte van het Iberisch schiereiland in Zuid-Europa tot Centraal-Azië.
Om meer inzicht te krijgen in de verscheidenheid en eenheid van het islamitische rijk en de cultuur die het voortbracht, richt Sijpesteijn zich ook op mondiale interacties (Global Interactions) en netwerken van de Middellandze Zee tot Zuidoost-Azië in de pre-moderne wereld, in het bijzonder hoe het Midden-Oosten daarin functioneerde.
Van materiële cultuur tot archeologie en theologische teksten, Sijpesteijn is geinteresseerd in de manieren waarop mensen, objecten en ideeën dit uitgestrekte gebied bereisden en de veranderingen die zij teweegbrachten.

Projecten
Sinds 2017 leidt Sijpesteijn een internationaal onderzoeksproject getiteld Embedding Conquest: Naturalising Muslim Rule in the Early Islamic Empire (600-1000), gefinancierd door de European Research Council (ERC). Met dit project wil Sijpesteijn aan de hand van de beschikbare contemporaine documenten het systeem van sociale relaties gedurende de eerste 400 jaar van het islamitische rijk reconstrueren. Dat sociale systeem maakte de cruciale overgang mogelijk van een "veroveringssamenleving" (conquest society) naar een politiek organisch geheel dat de ondergang van het centraal geleide kalifaat overleefde en tot op de dag van vandaag een voorbeeld voor de regio vormt. In haar eerdere ERC Starting Grant project, The Formation of Islam. The view from below (2009-2015) en het boek daar daaruit voortkwam, richtte Sijpesteijn zich op de ontstaansgeschiedenis en verspreiding van de islam na de zevende-eeuwse Arabische veroveringen. Ze maakte daarbij gebruik van essentiële maar tot dan toe vaak nog ongebruikte contemporaine bronnen: papyri afkomstig uit het huidige Egypte.
Sijpesteijn is daarnaast betrokken bij een internationaal onderzoeksproject getiteld Provinces and Empires: Islamic Egypt in the Ancient World.

Petra Sijpesteijn studeerde geschiedenis en Arabisch aan de Universiteit Leiden (MA), de Universiteit van Damascus, Cambridge University, Cornell University en Princeton University (MA, PhD), waar ze haar proefschrift in Near Eastern Studies in 2004 verdedigde. Ze was junior research fellow Oriental Studies bij Christ Church, Oxford (2003-2007), waarna ze naar het CNRS (Centre national de la recherche scientifique) in Parijs vertrok om als chargée de recherche aan de slag te gaan. In 2007 ontving ze een Starting Grant van de European Research Council, in 2015 een Consolidator Grant.
In 2008 werd ze benoemd tot hoogleraar en sindsdien bekleedt ze de leerstoel Arabische taal en cultuur aan de Universiteit Leiden. In 2001 richtte ze de International Society for Arabic Papyrology op, waar ze tot 2014 president van was. In 2013-2014 was ze Andrew H. Mellon research fellow bij een digitaliserings- en catalogiseringproject van papyri bij de Oostenrijkse Nationale Bibliotheek. Sijpesteijn vervulde gasthoogleraarschappen bij de École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Parijs, bij University College London in Qatar, en bij de Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Egypte. Van 2014-2018 was Petra Sijpesteijn directeur van het Leids Universitair Centrum voor de studie van Islam en Samenleving (LUCIS). Sinds 2016 is ze lid van de International Association of Papyrologists.
Ze treedt regelmatig op in de media en in publieke debatten om te praten over de geschiedenis van islam en over huidige ontwikkelingen in de moslimwereld.
