Marcels primaire onderzoeksfocus ligt op fundamenteel onderzoek naar oppervlaktewetenschap dat diepe inzichten verschaft in de onderliggende processen op atomaire schaal. Daarbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van scanningprobe-microscopie (STM, AFM, HFM, enz).
