Jaap Hamming is hoogleraar en hoofd vaatchirurgie en tevens hoofd klinische zaken van de afdeling Heelkunde. Hij is tevens nauw betrokken bij kwaliteit en patientveiligheid van het LUMC. Hij is lid van de Wetenschappelijk adviesraad van het Zorginstituut, lid van het Regionaal Medisch tuchtcollege en lid van de Raad van Toezicht van het Rijnstate.

Invasieve vaatchirurgie
De leerstoel is minimaal invasieve vaatchirurgie en gaat over onderzoek naar de ontwikkeling van technieken om de bijkomende schade van vasculaire interventies te beperken. Daarnaast wordt onderzoek gedaan naar de uitkomsten van zorg bij vaatpatienten en inspanningen om de kwaliteit en patientveiligheid te verhogen. Ook meer fundamentele vragen in de vasculaire biologie zijn onderwerp van onderzoek met name in samenwerking met anderen.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Jaap Hamming werd arts in 1987 promoveerde in 1988 op het proefschrift: Differentiated Thyroid Cancer: Current Considerations in the Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment. Na zijn opleiding praktiseerde hij als vaatchirurg en endocrien chirurg en werd benoemd tot hoogleraar en hield zijn oratie in 2005 met de titel: Chirurgenwerk, Teamwerk.
