Anne Heyer is universitair docent in moderne geschiedenis met een onderzoeksinteresse in voornamelijk politieke participatie in Europese landen (1800-heden). Ze werkt met de onderwerpen politieke partijen, populisme, sociale bewegingen en democratie in Europa (Duitsland, Nederland, Groot-Brittannië en Spanje). Haar huidige onderzoeksprojecten richten zich op de veranderende perceptie en werkwijzen van massapolitiek in de negentiende en twintigste eeuw. Daarnaast is ze onderzoeker bij de Duitse denktank voor politieke participatie 'd|part' waar ze actuele vraagstukken over politieke participatie bestudeert.
Onderzoek
Anne Heyer is universitair docent in moderne geschiedenis met een onderzoeksinteresse in voornamelijk politieke participatie in Europese landen (1800-heden). Momenteel werkt ze aan de veranderende perceptie en werkwijzen van massapolitiek in Duitsland, Nederland, Engeland en Spanje. Dit project maakt onder andere gebruik van digitale geesteswetenschappelijke methoden om grote gedigitaliseerde krantencorpora's te bestuderen. Momenteel bereidt ze ook een monografie 'The Making of the Democratic Party in Europe, 1860-1890'. Dit onderzoeksproject combineert historische en sociaalwetenschappelijke benaderingen om de opkomst van moderne partijorganisaties in een transnationale context te analyseren met case studies uit Duitsland, Groot-Brittannië en Nederland in de jaren 1860 en 1870.
Als projectleider in het onderzoeksproject 'De redelijkheid omstreden: Debatregels en de toegang tot de democratie, 1870-1940', gesubsidieerd door het Thorbecke Fonds, onderzoekt ze nieuwe partijen om zo uit te kunnen leggen hoe parlementen een democratische instelling worden. Ze heeft ook onlangs van het LUF de Snouck Hurgronjesubsidie ontvangen voor het project 'Keeping the powerful in check: from small communities to large states'. Het historische aspect van het project is concentreerd op het transnationale intellectuele debat over de gevaren van massapolitiek en mogelijke politieke oplossingen aan het eind van de negentiende en begin twintigste eeuw. Haar publicaties bevatten onderwerpen zoals democratie, academische carrieres, massamedia, politieke houdingen en populisme.

Onderzoeksonderwerpen zoals moderne vergelijkende en transnationale geschiedenis, politieke cultuur, populisme, democratie, politieke legitimiteit, politieke partijen, sociale bewegingen en digitale geesteswetenschappen.
CV
Anne Heyer heeft in Bremen, Tartu en Edinburgh gestudeerd en was een studiebeurshouder van de Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung. In 2019 verdedigde zij haar proefschrift "The Making of the Democratic Party" aan Universiteit Leiden in het kader van het door NWO gefinancierde onderzoeksproject "The Promise of Organization". Ze ontving beurzen voor een doctoraatsworkshop (Instituut voor Geschiedenis, Universiteit Leiden) en voor een innovatieve cursus over onderwijs (Lehre hoch N Netzwerk van de Alfred Töpfer Stiftung). Voordat ze universitair docent aan Universiteit Leiden werd, was Anne een postdoc van het door de EU Horizon 2020 gefinancierde onderzoeksproject TRANSPOP (Juan March Institute, Universidad Carlos III in Madrid), waarvoor ze negentiende-eeuwse volkspolitiek in Europa bestudeerde met digitale geesteswetenschappelijke methoden.
Anne Heyer is onder andere stichtend lid, redacteur en coördinator van de eerste internationale workshop van het Politieke Geschiedenis PhD Netwerk (PHPN). Ook was zij de Social Events Officer van LEO (Leidse University PhD Organisation) en organiseerde zij tijdens haar promotieonderzoek verschillende workshops over politieke geschiedenis aan de Universiteit Leiden. Daarnaast was ze redacteur van een blog-serie van de Duitse denktank d│part over populistische partijen. Haar onderwijs omvat onderwerpen als Europese geschiedenis, politieke partijen, politieke participatie en democratie.
