Staff exchanges are an extremely enjoyable way to discover other education systems, gain international and intercultural experience, develop new professional skills and network with foreign colleagues.

Staff exchange is available for both academic staff and non-academic staff. You can go on exchange both within and outside Europe. See the possibilities below. 

Europe

Types of activity

Via the Erasmus+ programme, you can undertake the following types of activity during your staff exchange. 

Via Erasmus+ for Training

All academic staff (WP) and non-academic staff (OBP), including Leiden-based PhD students, can do the following types of activity. For information and conditions see Erasmus+ for Training.

  • Language training
  • Job shadowing
  • Other short courses

Via Erasmus+ for Teaching Assignments

All Leiden-based WP and OBP staff can do teaching courses with European partners. For information and conditions see Erasmus+ for Teaching Assignments

University of Poitiers, France

  • Exchange type: Erasmus+ for Teaching Assignments
  • Duration: 2 - 5 days
  • Law and languages programme 
  • Subjects: European legal orders, plus subjects relating to International and Comparative law
  • Subsidy via Erasmus (limited funds in 2025-2026)
  • Deadline: 2 calls per year

North America

Together with our regional partners, we can explore opportunities for teaching, attending a training programme, or job shadowing based on your preferences. Please Contact Anette van Sandwijk at the Office for International Education to get started. It's a good idea to have two or three universities in mind to allow for a greater range of options.

UC Law, San Francisco, USA

Our faculty has enjoyed a very valuable collaboration with UC Law, San Francisco, since the early 1990s. Many of our employees have taught courses there over the years, and in return, we welcome a UC Law lecturer here every spring.

  • Duration: 7 weeks (condensed course) or full semester.
  • When: spring 
  • Subjects: to be agreed
  • What is covered: flight, visa, accomodation and small daily allowance for (high) living expenses
  • Deadline: 1 May

Note: Business travel reimbursement scheme does not apply to this exchange. Other matters relating to the stay, such as arranging replacements, are the responsibility of your department. Any other accommodation costs need to be paid by the individual.

Asia

Types of activity

  • Duration: 2 to 8 weeks (32 hours)
  • For who: teaching staff
  • Subjects: International law, Jurisprudence, Civil Law, Criminal Law, etc. AI & Law, Legal Technology, Environmental Law, Transnational Law, International Commercial Arbitration, International Business Law.
  • What is covered: flight, accomodation, and education subsidy by partner.

South America

Universidad Diego Portales - Chile

  • Exchange type: Erasmus ICM 
  • Duration: approx. 1.5 weeks, preferably in July (alternatives: October or March/April)
  • Subjects: environmental law, digital regulation, migration, and children's rights
  • Focus: primarily teaching, but stay may also offer opportunities for joint research, PhD student exchanges, and joint supervision
  • What is covered: flight and accommodation (via ICM)
  • Availability: 1 spot per year / 3-year cycle
  • Deadline: December 15

Australia

  • Exchange type: Erasmus ICM 
  • Duration: Max. 7 days (5 days plus 2 travel days, with possibility of extension)
  • Availability: 2 participants until August 2026 (we can also host 2 participants)
  • Subject: To be agreed upon
  • What is covered: Flight, accommodation (by ICM)
  • Deadline: To be confirmed

How to arrange your exchange

Once you have discussed your plans with your supervisor, contact Anette van Sandwijk by sending an email to a.m.m.van.sandwijk@law.leidenuniv.nl. Please specify your plans (staff training or teaching a course) and which university you would like to go to. The Office for International Education will then contact the partner university and discuss the options.

Incoming staff mobility

Of course, we are more than happy to receive staff from our international partners. You can request financing for staff mobility via your home university. There are also a number of visiting scholar programmes offered within the faculty. For more information, see Visiting Researchers.
