Humanities Hub

At the Humanities Hub, researchers can immerse themselves in the world of Digital Humanities, while students get the opportunity to develop their digital and media skills within the field of the humanities. The lab spaces of LUCDH, the Faculty of Humanities, and Journalism and New Media provide modern digital infrastructure and extensive support researchers and students.

Students use the Journalism Lab to acquire essential skills in journalism and new media. The lab focuses mainly on multimediality and innovation. Students are trained in editing, interviewing, researching, writing, photography, video and podcast production, and image and text editing of their work. They also learn how to publish their creations effectively online, and study the theory behind successful journalistic productions. For more information, see the Journalism and New Media page.

The Editorial Room is a space where Journalism & New Media students can edit their audio and video productions.

The Digital Lab is a meeting place for staff and students working in the field of Digital Humanities, where they can collaborate and share their expertise. The Digital Lab has advanced equipment available for research in Digital Humanities and regularly hosts lectures and workshops designed to develop and enhance skills in this field.

More information on the possibilities of the Digital Lab

The AI Humanities Lab is an innovative space where researchers explore the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and the Humanities. Focusing on collaborative work, the lab brings together scholars from diverse disciplines to develop and apply AI technologies, and foster innovative research in the Humanities. The main purpose of the AI lab is to serve as a knowledge exchange hub by fostering collaboration, sharing expertise, and facilitating the exchange of ideas. Interested researchers can receive guidance and training in high-performance computing, deep learning, and their applicationto research questions within the Humanities. The AI lab provides access to powerful computing resources, making it an ideal environment for training deep learning models, imageprocessing and high-speed data analysis.

The AI lab at the new Humanities Hub is the first of the new SAILS labs which will be opened in 2024 and Spring 2025. These labs will be available for use for all staff of University Leiden and LUMC which are connected to the SAILS programme.

For more information, or to discuss the possibilities, contact Jelena Prokic.

Medialab+ offers interactive workshops for students on podcasts, video essays, knowledge clips and blogs, where they practise their digital skills and science communication and gain experience with the professional equipment available in the Humanities Hub. These workshops take place as part of a course and are planned in consultation with the course teacher. Students work on creating a media product in the context of their own research area.

The Maker Space is a creative environment where students and researchers can access a professional 3D scanner, 3D printer, and a camera based scanning system for high-quality text and image digitisation. Interested in using the Maker Space? Contact the Digital Lab for assistance and to explore the available options.

Teachers can use the Humanities Hub film studio to record professional videos for a range of educational and/or research purposes. For example, 10-minute knowledge clips/explainers that clarify a specific topic or research study. Knowledge clips allow more efficient use of contact hours and create more time for interaction and in-depth learning during classes. They can also be used to explain and promote an (ongoing) research study. Students may also use the studio, but only in the context of their study programme.

The equipment here is professional-level, including studio lights, autocue, cameras and microphones. You can therefore currently only use this film studio if a camera operator is present to provide professional support. The Humanities Hub provides this support free of charge, on request.

Please contact ECOLe to discuss the options specifically designed for teachingFor research purposes, you should contact the Digital Lab.

The podcast studio is a dedicated space equipped with modern recording technology, enabling students to create professional recordings for (live) audio broadcasts. Through podcasts and livestreams, students engage with course material in a new way, emphasizing science communication and collaboration. Skills developed at the faculty, such as critical thinking, analysis, and reflection, can be shared with a broader audience via podcasts and livestreams. Support and advice are available for instructors interested in incorporating podcasts or livestreams into their teaching.

The Leiden Ludic Collective is an open initiative and shared space for academics and gamers of all levels to meet up, exchange ideas and – most importantly – play games together.

The collective meets twice a month to discuss texts, games, current events and exceptional phenomena, and to share their thoughts on topics like TTRPGs, retrogaming, playgrounds, e-sports and magic circles. We also talk about more ‘challenging’ themes, such as improvisational theatre, confrontation games and parasocial interaction. The LLC is also an inspiring place for collaborative creative projects, such as writing hypertext, producing zines and discovering how many house rules we can add to a game of Uno before it completely falls apart. The LLC’s aim is to promote the exchange of ideas across disciplinary boundaries, so everyone is welcome at the (game) table and participation is entirely voluntary. Please feel free to call in at Huizinga 0.14 to see our brand new Ludic Lab, or fill in the form to join our mailing list and learn more!

The Translation Lab hosts research and training activities in various aspects of translation, including audiovisual translation, machine translation and AI, translation process research and user’s reception. It is equipped with the latest computer-assisted translation tools, subtitling software, corpus processing tools, and AI/MT applications, freely available to all Leiden researchers and students. In addition to attending the courses Translator’s Tools and Subtitling in Theory and Practice, students enhance their translation technology skills through the lab's facilities. The Translation Lab runs the Leiden Translation talks and other events, inviting distinguished scholars to share their research on translation, localization, and technology.
