If you need help

If PhD candidates encounter problems, they should ask for help early on. If the problem is of an academic nature (in relation to research or teaching), their supervisors are the first port of call. If the issue falls outside the remit of the supervisors, there are several options.

  • Confidential counseling for PhD candidates (scroll down to find the Faculty of Humanities counsellor), for confidential advice on issues you’d like to discuss with someone other than your supervisors
  • University doctors and university psychologists, for advice on physical and mental health issues (scroll down)
  • The LIAS director of doctoral studies, for queries on the LIAS PhD programme (skills training, research talks, PhD Seminars, scientific integrity module)
  • The LIAS coordinator of doctoral studies, for soundboarding and advice on your individual trajectory
  • The PhD council chairperson, for raising any concerns or ideas you may have about the PhD programme & community or the LIAS at large
  • The Service Centre International Staff, for advice and services for international employees and guest researchers
  • The LIAS secretariat, for practical matters such as the formalities of your enrolment, material support, and so on
  • The Leids Promovendi Overleg (LEO): in addition to information on the representation of PhD students in the university community, their “Resources” page has useful information on matters such as moving to Leiden, PhD associations, PhD rights, mental health, problems in the workplace, and personal development & well-being
