Visiting Researchers

LIAS welcomes Visiting PhD Candidates and Visiting Researchers (post-PhD) from around the world who are interested in working with LIAS scholars and/or making use of the Leiden University Library’s holdings in Middle Eastern and Asian Studies for their research. Information about the application procedure can be found below.

Visiting Researchers

The following conditions apply:

  • The application must be submitted to the LIAS Management Team at least four months in advance using this designated form;
  • The Visiting Researcher must hold an active appointment at a university or research institution (or equivalent) outside the Netherlands at the time of their guest appointment;
  • The Visiting Researcher must contribute to LIAS and collaborate with LIAS members on a predefined research project with clear goals and outcomes;
  • Research stays may not exceed one year and cannot be extended beyond the duration originally stated in the application;
  • Visiting Researchers may choose between a short-term guest stay (maximum of 3 months, no visa arrangements through Leiden University, and no fee) or a long-term guest stay (between 3 and 12 months, includes visa arrangements through Leiden University, with a fee of €450);
  • Visiting Researchers cannot bring family members or other third parties to the Netherlands under this scheme. Leiden University will arrange a visa only for the Visiting Researcher, not for any accompanying third parties;
  • LIAS will host no more than fifteen Visiting Researchers per calendar year. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Visiting PhD Candidates

The following conditions apply:

  • The application must be submitted to the LIAS Management Team at least four months in advance using this designated form;
  • The Visiting PhD Candidate must be actively enrolled as a PhD candidate at a university or research institution (or equivalent) outside the Netherlands at the time of their guest appointment;
  • The Visiting PhD Candidate must contribute to LIAS and collaborate with LIAS members on a predefined research project with clear goals and outcomes;
  • Research stays may not exceed one year and cannot be extended beyond the duration originally stated in the application;
  • Visiting PhD Candidates may choose between a short-term guest stay (maximum of 3 months, no visa arrangements through Leiden University, and no fee) or a long-term guest stay (between 3 and 12 months, includes visa arrangements through Leiden University, with a fee of €450);
