The Leiden university Institute for Philosophy is thrilled to launch a new MA 120 Philosophy of the Arts. See: Philosophy of the Arts (MA) - Leiden University
To celebrate the event, we will organise a launch event on 23 September 2026 to which all interested colleagues and students are warmly welcome.
We will first enjoy a keynote talk from our distinguished guest Prof. Adriana Cavarero (University of Verona) titled:
"Listening to the Sirens: A Philosophical Interpretation of a Vocal Myth"
After the talk, q&a, and a pause, we will organise a roundtable discussion:
"How Does Art Think – How to Think with Art"
How does art help us do philosophy - how can philosophy help art?
Is philosophy fundamentally alien to art, because philosophy seeks clarity where art needs mystery?
Or is the destiny of philosophy on the contrary to become a form of art?
Art thinks, and sometimes it is conceptual, but does it think differently from philosophy and if it does, how?
Participants of the roundtable are
- Prof. Susanna Lindberg, Institute for philosophy
- Prof. Nidesh Lawtoo, LUCAS
- Dr. Natascia Tosel, University of Verona
- Prof. Anke Haarmann, ACPA
- Prof. Stijn Bussels, LUCAS
Chair: Dr. Johan de Jong
The event will be concluded with artistic program, tba
