Peter Webb is Universitair Docent Arabische literatuur en cultuur aan de Universiteit Leiden en specialist in vroege Arabische poëzie en proza. Hij combineert filologische, literaire en antropologische benaderingen om te laten zien hoe poëzie en andere verhalende tradities hebben bijgedragen aan de ontwikkeling van Arabische en islamitische identiteit.
Curriculum Vitae
Peter Webb studeerde Arabisch aan SOAS, University of London, en aan de Universiteit van Damascus. Aansluitend behaalde hij een MA in Islamitische Studies aan SOAS. Daarna kwalificeerde hij zich als advocaat in de insolventie- en herstructureringspraktijk bij Clifford Chance LLP in Londen.
Hij behaalde zijn doctoraat in 2014 aan SOAS, onder begeleiding van professor Hugh Kennedy. Zijn proefschrift, Creating Arab Origins: Muslim Constructions of al-Jāhiliyya and Arab History, onderzocht hoe vroege moslims het pre-islamitische verleden en de Arabische identiteit conceptualiseerden. Dit werk werd later gepubliceerd als de monografie: Imagining the Arabs (Edinburgh University Press, 2016).
Na het behalen van zijn doctoraat ontving Peter Webb de Art Histories and Aesthetic Practices Fellowship (2014-2015) van het Forum Transregionale Studien in Berlijn, en een British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2015, die hij uitvoerde bij SOAS. In 2017 trad hij in dienst bij de Universiteit Leiden als universitair docent (Assistant Professor) Arabische Literatuur en Cultuur. Hij was hoofdonderzoeker van het NWO Veni-project Epic Pasts: Pre-Islam Through Muslim Eyes (2018-2021).
Zijn huidige onderzoek richt zich op de mogelijkheden van een nauwkeurige en contextueel geïnformeerde lezing van pre-islamitische Arabische poëzie en de receptie daarvan gedurende de islamitische periode. In 2024 verrichtte hij veldonderzoek in Saoedi-Arabië, waarbij hij de sporen volgde van pre-islamitische dichters in de omgeving van Mekka en Medina, en daarbij (in veel gevallen voor het eerst) de locaties ontdekte die in hun poëzie worden noemen.
Onderzoek
Het onderzoek van Peter Webb richt zich op de snijvlakken van literatuur, geheugen en identiteit in pre-islamitisch en vroeg-islamitisch Arabië. Zijn eerste monografie, Imagining the Arabs: Arab Identity and the Rise of Islam, bood het eerste kritische onderzoek naar de Arabische ethnogenese en integreerde antropologische theorie met vroeg-Arabische literatuur. In The Arab Thieves: al-Maqrīzī’s al-Ḫabarʿan al-bašar, Luṣūṣ al-ʿArab (Brill, 2019), bestudeerde hij pre-islamitische Arabische bandieten en plunderaars wier heldendaden werden herdacht in poëzie. Hij combineerde tekstanalyse met verkennend veldwerk ten zuiden van Mekka. Zijn recente kritische edities en vertalingen omvatten The Excellence of the Arabs (2017), Ibn Qutaybah's krachtige verdediging van het Arabische erfgoed in het negende-eeuwse Bagdad, en The Genius of Invective (2025), een commentaar dat de historische en literaire toespelingen in de beroemde elfde-eeuwse brief van Ibn Zaydūn ontleedt.
Peter Webb's door NWO gefinancierde project Epic Pasts: Pre-Islam Through Muslim Eyes (2018-2021) onderzocht hoe vroege moslims de geschiedenis van het pre-islamitische tijdperk herinnerden en reconstrueerden.
Onderwijs
Peter Webb verzorgt Engelstalig onderwijs op BA-, MA- en Research MA-niveau binnen de volgende vakgebieden:

- Themes in Arabic Literature: Bandits and Outlaws (MA and ResMA)
- History through the lens of Poetry (ResMA and PhD Seminar)
Daarnaast begeleidt hij scripties op BA-, MA- en Research MA-niveau, evenals proefschriften, over uiteenlopende onderwerpen zoals Arabische literatuur, de geschiedenis van het Midden-Oosten en islamitische architectuur van Egypte tot India.
