Fijs van Leeuwen is hoogleraar radiologie, waarbinnen hij het onderzoeksthema ‘moleculaire beeldvorming en beeldgeleide therapie’ trekt. Tevens is hij mede hoofd van het LUMC brede ‘beeldgeleide chirurgie’ initiatief. Naast zijn aanstellingen binnen het LUMC heeft hij: een gast-hoogleraarschap bij de Bionanotechnologie groep aan de universiteit van Wageningen, gast-aanstellingen bij de afdelingen hoofd-hals chirurgie en urologie van het Nederlands kanker instituut- Antoni van Leeuwenhoek ziekenhuis, is hij chief innovation officer bij het Belgische chirurgische trainingscentrum Orsi Academy en is hij voorzitter van de translationele moleculaire beeldvorming en therapie commissie van de European Association of Nuclear Medicine. Zijn onderzoek is beloond met verschillende persoonlijke prijzen en subsidies, waaronder drie ERC-beurzen, NWO VENI, VIDI en VICI beurzen en een translationeel KWF-fellowship.
Moleculaire beeldvorming en beeldgeleide therapie
De leerstoel “moleculaire beeldvorming en beeldgeleide therapie’ heeft als doel om door middel van biomedische beeldvormende technieken de totstandkoming van precisie geneeskunde binnen het LUMC te faciliteren. Zo kan met behulp van contrastmiddelen die voorzien zijn van diagnostische labels (b.v. radioisotopen of fluorescente kleurstoffen) de verspreiding van een ziekte in een patiënt op een niet-invasieve manier aangetoond worden. Hiermee ontstaat als het ware een routekaart die naast diagnostische toepassingen ook gebruikt kan worden voor de realisatie van een geoptimaliseerd behandelings-traject. Hierbinnen kan (moleculaire) beeldvorming ingezet worden om therapeutische ingrepen te sturen en zo uitbreiding van het klinische takenpakket binnen de afdeling radiologie en nucleaire geneeskunde te bewerkstelligen. Beeldgeleide therapie komt hierbij terug in twee vormen: 1) Als manier om behandelingen met farmaca te sturen (bv. gestuurde afgifte geneesmiddelen, vaccins of therapeutische cellen) en/of om inzicht te krijgen in de onderliggende mechanismen van het ziekteproces. 2) Als sturing voor de implementatie van medische apparatuur (bv. biopsie/ablatie naalden, chirurgische instrumenten of radiotherapie). Deze tweede toepassing betekent dat de leerstoel niet alleen gericht is op chemische innovaties, maar ook actief is op het gebied van instrumentontwikkeling (bv. chirurgische fluorescentie camera’s) en het creëren van oplossingen op het gebied van digitale geneeskunde (b.v. beeldanalyse en ‘gps-achtige’ navigatie).
Klinische implementatie van de ontwikkelde technieken geven de medische aspecten van de leerstoel weer. Om translatie naar de patiënt te bewerkstelligen (“van molecuul/ instrument naar patiënt”) zijn de onderzoeksprojecten binnen de leerstoel gericht op specifieke medische uitdagingen. Daarnaast zal de leerstoel ingezet worden om een ondernemende en multidisciplinaire werkomgeving te creëren waarbinnen technisch personeel, wetenschappers en artsen – in dien wenselijk met de industrie - samen werken aan het ontwikkelen en valoriseren van beeldvormende technieken die breed ingezet kunnen worden binnen de geneeskunde. Toepassing van de gedane innovaties in klinische studies, onderwijs, verkrijgen van maatschappelijke betrokkenheid, (inter)nationale samenwerkingsverbanden/verenigingen en privaat-publieke samenwerkingen helpen disseminatie en impact te verzekeren.
Wetenschappelijke carrière
Na zijn studie scheikunde aan de Universiteit van Leiden heeft Fijs zijn doctoraat behaald aan de Universiteit van Twente (2005; Mesa+ instituut for nanotechnologie, Enschede/ Nuclear Research Consultancy Group, Petten). Na zijn promotie is hij verder gegaan als postdoc bij het Nederlands Kanker Instituut- Antoni van Leeuwenhoek ziekenhuis. Hier heeft hij verschillende posities bekleed op de afdelingen Chemische Biologie, Radiologie, en Nucleaire Geneeskunde. In 2009 was hij gepromoveerd tot associate staf-scientist met een onafhankelijke onderzoekslijn op het gebied van interventionele moleculaire beeldvorming/ beeldgeleide chirurgie. Sinds 2011 werk hij, met zijn groep, op de afdeling Radiologie van het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC). Hier begon hij als associate-professor en is in 2020 benoemd tor hoogleraar (leerstoel: moleculaire beeldvorming & beeldgeleide therapie).
