Bastiaan Rijpkema is Associate Professor of Jurisprudence at Leiden University, Department of Jurisprudence.
His most recent books are Militant Democracy: The Limits of Democratic Tolerance (Routledge, 2018), Militant Democracy – Political Science, Law and Philosophy (co-editor, Springer, 2018) and, in Dutch, De strijd om de democratie (co-editor, Boom, 2018). For the Dutch edition of Militant Democracy he was awarded the prize for the best Dutch political book of the year in 2016, the Prinsjesboekenprijs. In 2017 he won the New Scientist Wetenschapstalentprijs 2017 (New Scientist Science Talent Prize), the prize for the most talented young researcher of the Netherlands and Flanders (Dutch-speaking Belgium). Rijpkema teaches and coordinates teaching in LL.B. and LL.M. courses on legal philosophy and methodology. He is a member of the Leiden Law School’s Research Board (together with Prof. dr. Wim Voermans) and coordinates the LL.M. in Legal Theory and Philosophy (in Dutch). Rijpkema is also part of the board of the Dutch Association for Legal Philosophy and an editorial board member at the Netherlands Journal of Legal Philosophy.
