Impossible often simply means not yet made

On Wednesday 14 of October, we had a wonderful afternoon at Leiden University - Faculty of Science during a special Tuesday Talk celebrating 150 years of our Fine Mechanical and Electronics Department.

Lecture on the instruments developed for the Einstein Telescope by Jurriaan Langendorff and Kees van Oosten

Colleagues, researchers, and technical experts came together to explore how bold scientific ideas are transformed into working prototypes — from first sketches to finely engineered instruments. The presentations offered a fascinating behind‑the‑scenes look at the creativity and craftsmanship that make groundbreaking research possible.

Commemorative plaque

To conclude the event, Dean Jasper Knoester surprised the instrument makers with a commemorative plaque, presented to the instrument makers team in recognition of their exceptional contribution to science in Leiden for 150‑year long. Their work proves that impossible often simply means not yet made.
