Insolvency law PhD students meet for research workshop at Leiden University
Leiden University hosted the second annual PhD workshop on European and International Insolvency Law organized by the Foundation Bob Wessels Insolvency Law Collection (BWILC). The event that provided PhD candidates from universities all over Europe the chance to discuss their research with fellow PhD researchers and eminent professors took place on 5 and 6 March 2020.
Following the donation by Prof. Em. Bob Wessels of his private book collection to the foundation, BWILC was founded in 2016. For the second time the foundation organized a PhD Workshop in order to provide for a venue to promote PhD research. After an opening speech from the Dean of PhD Studies of the Graduate School of the Leiden Law School, Dr. Masja van Meeteren, thirteen PhD candidates from eleven different universities presented their research in the form of either a presentation or a poster.
PhD Research
The Workshop gives researchers in the field of European/International Insolvency Law the chance to test and discuss their findings. On top of strengthening their research, the PhD Workshop aims to give PhD Students who are at the same stage of their legal or academic career, a platform for exchanging experiences and/or creating an international network.
First prize
At the end of the conference the BWILC board awarded prizes to the most original presentations. This year the prizes were awarded to the presentation of Ioannis Bazinas (University College London, UK) on the topic of recognition and enforcement of foreign insolvency-related judgments and reorganizational plans under the US and the UK systems, as well as the presentation of Axel Krohn (Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg, Germany) on the new EU Relative Priority Rule in Article 11 of the EU Directive on Restructuring and Insolvency.
Next edition of the PhD Workshop
This edition of the PhD Workshop was very much appreciated by all participants for it allowed academic growth, engagement with colleagues and testing new research ideas. The next edition of the BWILC PhD Workshop will be held in February or March 2021.
