Professor of Insolvency Law
Reinout Vriesendorp has been a part-time Professor of Insolvency Law at the Institute of Private Law (Department of Company Law) and the Institute of Tax Law and Economics (Department of Business Studies) since 1 January 2016. At the Department of Company Law, he teaches various modules within the bachelor's, master's and advanced master's programmes. His research is at the intersection between private law, company law and business studies and primarily focuses on national and international restructuring and insolvency law.
Legal practice
Alongside his part-time tenure as a Professor of Insolvency Law at Leiden University, Professor Vriesendorp was also a Partner at Netherlands-based law firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek until June 2023, where he specialised in restructuring, corporate litigation and insolvency law.
Other positions and activities
Professor Vriesendorp was one of the founders, and until 2021 one of the editors, of the Tijdschrift voor Insolventierecht (Dutch Insolvency Law Review) and was a member of the Editorial Board of the International Insolvency Review. He lectures in professional postgraduate programmes at the Grotius Academy in collaboration with INSOLAD, the professional association of insolvency specialists in the Netherlands. He is substitute judge at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal and in that capacity was previously a substitute member of the Court of Discipline (the final Dutch disciplinary board of the Dutch Bar Association). Professor Vriesendorp is also a member of various professional associations, both national and international (INSOL International and INSOL Europe), and member of the Executive of the Conference on European Restructuring and Insolvency Law (CERIL). He is Chair of the Royal Dutch Football Association's Advisory Committee on Licensing Matters.
Professor Vriesendorp has annotated a number of landmark Dutch Supreme Court judgments in the field of insolvency law in the Dutch student law review Ars Aequi. He was a member of the Dutch government's Committee on Insolvency Law, which drafted a proposal for a full revision of the Insolvency Act. He was also member of the Dutch debt restructuring monitoring committee.
Previous activities and studies
Prior to his appointment as Professor of Insolvency Law in Leiden, Reinout Vriesendorp was a Professor of Civil and Commercial Law at Tilburg University from 1992 to 2016. He lectured on a variety of subjects in the field of private law and commercial law to students at all stages of the law curriculum. Before then, he worked as a lawyer at (the predecessors of) De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek in The Hague and New York between 1985 and 1992.
Professor Vriesendorp graduated in law from Groningen University on 18 December 1981 and defended his dissertation on Eigendomsvoorbehoud (Retention of title) in 1985 under the supervision of Professor Jan Lokin.
