Michael Crandol is een universitair docent aan het Institute for Area Studies. Mijn onderwijs en onderzoek richt zich op Japanse film, animatie en populaire media, evenals tradities van het monsterlijke en bovennatuurlijke in de Oost-Aziatische cultuur. Ik ben gespecialiseerd in de geschiedenis van de Japanse horrorfilm en ben vooral geïnteresseerd in hoe populaire noties van genre opnieuw worden gectextualiseerd over cultureel-taalkundige grenzen.
