Lucas doet onderzoek naar de religieuze leefwereld van Duitse taalwetenschappers (met name experts op het gebied van Oud Engelse letterkunde) in de negentiende eeuw. Hij is vooral geïnteresseerd in de mate waarin iemands persoonlijke vorm van religie (vaak een vorm van christendom) zijn/haar wetenschappelijke publicaties en carrière kan beïnvloeden. Daarnaast heeft hij een achtergrond in onderzoek naar ‘medievalist fantasy’, oftewel, de invloed van de middeleeuwen op hedendaagse fantasyliteratuur (bijv. J.R.R. Tolkiens *In de ban van de ring*).
