Onderzoek
Het onderwerp van mijn onderzoek is nieuwigheid ('novelty'). In eerdere studies heb ik interessante effecten van nieuwigheid op aandacht, arousal en lange-termijn geheugen gevonden.
Als je een nieuwe plek bezoekt is het van belang snel te leren waar je beloningen kunt vinden, maar ook waar gevaar schuilt. Dierenstudies hebben laten zien dat een nieuwe omgeving de plasticiteit in het brein verhoogt, met name in de hippocampus, om het leren van dat soort cruciale informatie te bevorderen. Tot nu toe zijn er erg weinig studies die de effecten van omgevingsnieuwheid op leren in mensen hebben onderzocht. In een eerdere studie vond ik dat het leren is verbeterd nadat mensen een nieuwe in plaats van bekende omgeving verkend hebben. In mijn toekomstige onderzoek wil ik virtual reality (VR) gebruiken om verder verhelderen welke aspecten van het verkennen van een nieuwe omgeving deze effecten kunnen verklaren en onderzoeken of deze effecten ook gebruikt kunnen worden in klinische toepassingen.
