Gjovalin Macaj is een universitair docent in United Nations Studies in Peace and Justice bij het Institute of Security and Global Affairs van de Universiteit Leiden, waar hij ook fungeert als het belangrijkste aanspreekpunt voor de VN-gerelateerde initiatieven van het Instituut.
Hij heeft een DPhil in internationaal mensenrechtenrecht en instellingen van de Universiteit van Oxford en een PhD in Europees buitenlands beleid van de Vrije Universiteit Brussel. Zijn onderzoek en onderwijs richten zich op de theorie en praktijk van mensenrechten, ethiek, normen, diplomatie, de Europese Unie en het systeem van de Verenigde Naties.
