Charles Berger is hoogleraar criminalistiek bij het Instituut voor Strafrecht & Criminologie sinds 2011. Zijn leerstoel wordt mogelijk gemaakt door Stichting Leerstoel Criminalistiek. Daarnaast is hij ook principal scientist bij het Nederlands Forensisch Instituut (NFI).
Hij is gespecialiseerd in de criminalistiek, en met name in onderwerpen als forensisch interpreteren en concluderen (logica, kansrekening, bewijswaarde). Bij het NFI is hij actief op vele gebieden, zoals onderwijs, R&D strategie, en eigen wetenschappelijk onderzoek waarover hij internationaal publiceert. Daarnaast ondersteunt hij de NFI deskundigen, adviseert hij de directie, en bewaakt hij de inhoudelijke wetenschappelijke kwaliteit.
Voordat hij zich ontwikkelde tot generalist is hij bij het NFI opgeleid tot forensisch documentdeskundige. Charles heeft een exact-wetenschappelijke achtergrond: hij is een gepromoveerd natuurkundige (Universiteit Twente). Na zijn promotie deed hij zes jaar ervaring op in het buitenland met projecten in the Naval Reasearch Labs, de universiteiten van Californië en Bordeaux, en de École Normale Supérieure in Parijs.
Op het moment zet hij zich in voor het logisch correct redeneren en concluderen, het objectiveren van het forensisch onderzoek, en het interpreteren op activiteitniveau. Voor die vooruitgang is het essentieel dit zo vaak en zo goed mogelijk uit te leggen aan alle betrokkenen in de strafrechtsketen. Het is een mooie uitdaging op het snijvlak van de werelden van wetenschap, politie en juristen.
