Call for Proposals | City Diplomacy: Framework or Patchwork

For a new forum of The Hague Journal of Diplomacy, we are inviting you to submit a proposal for a forum essay on city diplomacy (deadline: 15 August 2021).

Length: approx. 200 words

Deadline: Midnight August 15 (Pacific Time)

Submission address: Sohaela Amiri, University of Southern California: soamiri@usc.edu

Whilst city diplomacy as a topic of study is gaining more attention, the practice is often approached through fields other than the study of diplomacy or IR. A commonly accepted framework is missing to shape research and scholarship. This Forum invites contributions on the diplomatic practices and international networks of local governments. We particularly welcome the perspectives of various geographies and political systems. HJD aims to promote debate and uncover the dynamics between national diplomacy and cities’ international practices, and also highlight areas in need of policy and strategy development.

Different from original research articles, apart from being short (approx. 3.000 words), Forum essays are typically more debate-oriented and they are meant to be a source of inspiration for future academic work. Contributions are usually informed by academic research, but we also welcome pieces by practitioners. Past Forums have been followed-up by HJD webinars and podcasts, and they have proven to stimulate class discussion in graduate seminars.
