Yra van Dijk focuses on the relationship between literature, memory and media. She is currently working on a project to analyze Dutch Caribbean Narratives in a comparative and cross-media perspective. In 2018 she published a critically acclaimed monograph on the oeuvre of German-Dutch author Arnon Grunberg in the light of Shoah memory and trauma of the second generation. The study is now available as Open Access free download: see under ‘profile’.

Profile

Since 2016, the focus of Yra van Dijk in teaching and publications is on Dutch Caribbean Art, Media and Literature. Studying Caribbean narrative and identity from a postcolonial persective, she looks specifically at ways in which Cultural Memory and Critique is produced in these different objects. In 2020, she works on a collaborative project with the Surinam National Archive en the Literature Museum on an on- and offline exposition on the work of six Surinamese authors.

Before her chair in Leiden, Van Dijk worked in Paris (2000-2004), and at the University of Amsterdam (2006-2013) and was a visiting scholar at UCSD in 2010, studying digital communities for the HERA-project ELMCIP.

Book Projects

Van Dijks next book project Media and Memory in the Dutch Caribbean Novel  is planned for 2022. Building on her publications on affect, ecology and media in the work of Astrid Roemer, Boelie van Leeuwen or Cola Debrot, she places the texts in their comparative Caribbean context, demonstrating how structures of signification in these novels may be understood against the backdrop of Caribbean Theory such as Édouard Glissant.

In 2018, Van Dijk finished Afgrond zonder vangnet, a monograph on the oeuvre of the Dutch second generation author Arnon Grunberg. An Open Access download of the book can be found here. Reviews in national newspapers can be found here, here and here.  Reviews in academic journals by Maaike Meijer (Nederlandse letterkunde 24, 3, 2019),  Laurens Ham in Spiegel der Letteren (61, 2, 2019) and Wilbert Smulders in Tijdschrift voor Nederlandse Taal en Letterkunde: here.

The book addresses issues such as: How can literature describe and produce identification with both perpetrators and victims? What can writing mean in the light of global violence and ethical aporia's? It also charts the development from a satirical and autobiographical young author to a self-reflexive public intellectual who produces multi-directional memory between the Holocaust and contemporary evil.

In collaborations, Van Dijk published edited volumes on Late-postmodern literature (Reconsidering the PostmodernEuropean Literature Beyond Relativism AUP, 2011) and a much used handbook on Theory and Practice of Intertextuality (Draden in het donker, Vantilt, 2012).

Reading and interpretation

In a large consortium with teachers, stake-holders (editors, semi-government institutions) and colleagues from different disciplines, universities and schools of higher education, Yra van Dijk is leading the development of a large research project: All inclusive. Literature for everybody. The intention is to improve literacy with the development and implementation of an innovative and attractive form of reading, called 'inquisitive': an analytical and hermeneutic process of seven stages. This method is a more up-to-date form of reading literature as a dialogical, dynamic process of identification, appropriation, and cultural negotiation. Bringing in these new perspectives in the static school canon will open up the literature class to a new and diverse cultural archive, from the work of Surinamese authors to Hip-Hop texts.

Literature and New Media

After her Ph.D. on typography and poetry (published as a Dutch monograph by Vantilt, 2006), the attention for media and materiality led to research in digital literature. In the course of a HERA-project on Digital Communities, Yra van Dijk published on the Poetics in digital literary communities, and on the materialities of (hand)writing in digital literature.

Her focus has been more specifically on the relation between Nostalgia, Memory and Digital Culture, as in the article with Emma de Vries on paradoxes of media change in literature. This has also resulted in articles on literary digital work, like that of Tonnus Oosterhoff, in which remediation produces and problematizes cultural memory, of WO II particularly (in: Literature and Multimedia in late 20th and 21st Century Europe (2014). Recently, this focus has led to publications on representations of media and technology in the novel, too, such as in the postcolonial novel. (Spiegel der Letteren, 2017).

Digital Memory

The interest in Media and Memory has resulted in a European research project: a collaboration with 8 partners from 6 countries on Digital memory of the Holocaust. Between 2017-2019, three interdisciplinary and international seminars were organized, resulting in a joint application for a larger research project and in various publications, such as this essay and a panel on  this ESSHC conference in 2021.

Projects

Van Dijks next project Dutch-Caribbean Narratives across media aims to be a comprehensive analysis of narrative in the Dutch Caribbean (1920-2020) in different media and platforms (Poems and Novels, Film, Journals, Radio, Spoken word, Hip-hop). These objects will be analyzed in their historical postcolonial context, in a comparative Caribbean context and in a global context of, for example, popular youth culture.

Teaching activities

When teaching in the Dutch department, Van Dijk takes a comparative stance, focusing on modern Dutch prose and poetry in a global and medial perspective. Her course on Shoah representations in art and literature focuses for example on both Dutch texts and contexts, and also on international digital archives, movies, art and literature, courses on Dutch Caribbean Literature or Discourses of Slavery do the same in a global perspective, as do courses on Memory and Trauma, for example in South-African Literature.

Outreach

She is the Chair of the National Raad voor de Neerlandistiek, Chair of the Board of De Nederlandse Boekengids, and regularly gives national and international lectures.

The Raad van de Neerlandistiek was founded in 2018 in order to unite the different disciplined and departments of Dutch Studies. Apart from meeetings and seminars, Yra van Dijk organized the first Neerlandistiekdagen in March 2020, with hundreds of visitors and a live radio show of De Taalstaat.

PhD-students

Currently, Van Dijk is supervising five PhD-projects, focussing on (Postcolonial) Memory, Literature, Media and Popular Culture:

Book

In Afgrond zonder vangnet.

(Maaike Meijer, Nederlandse letterkunde 24, 3, 2019).
