Roeland van der Rijst is professor educational science at the Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching (ICLON) and fellow of the Leiden Teachers' Academy.

Roeland van der Rijst is professor of educational sciences at Leiden University Graduate School of Teaching (ICLON) and honorary fellow of the Leiden Teachers' Academy. After working as a science teacher at secondary schools in South Africa and the Netherlands, he started his career in higher education. In 2009 he received his PhD degree for his research on higher education pedagogies at Leiden University. Currently his research interests are focused on ‘teaching and learning in higher education’ and ‘teacher professional development’. He is board member and senior fellow of the national educational research school (ICO), associate editor of the International Journal for Academic Development, and editorial board member of Pedagogische Studiën, Future in Educational Research, and Teaching in Higher Education.

Research

Roeland's research expertise and activities are focused on teaching and learning in higher education. His publications explore various themes surrounding the design, implementation, and evaluation of conducive learning environments in higher education contexts around the globe. Many of his studies draw attention to teaching at research intensive universities. He supervises several PhD students from various national and international higher education contexts.

Teaching

Roeland is honorary fellow of the Leiden Teachers’ Academy, is a teacher educator and is awarded with the senior university teacher qualification (SKO). Furthermore, he gives various keynote at international conferences, contributes to workshops and training activities for teaching staff and supports educational innovations at national and international higher education institutes.
